what does human resources handle?
Human Resources (HR) is essential to building a strong, supportive, and effective workplace. Here’s a breakdown of some key functions:
Talent Acquisition
HR handles recruiting, interviewing, and hiring processes, ensuring the organization attracts and retains the best talent. This includes job postings, screening applicants, conducting interviews, and onboarding new hires to help them succeed from day one.
Employee Relations
HR is responsible for fostering a positive work environment by addressing employee concerns, resolving conflicts, and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion. This also includes managing workplace policies, addressing grievances, and providing mediation when necessary.
Policy Development and Enforcement
HR creates, implements, and enforces policies that govern the workplace. These policies include standards for conduct, health and safety guidelines, anti-discrimination measures, and compliance with labor laws, ensuring fairness and consistency.
Compensation and Benefits
HR manages salary structures, health benefits, retirement plans (like your 401(k) program), and other perks that help attract and retain employees. They work to ensure that the organization’s compensation is fair, competitive, and aligns with industry standards.
Training and Development
HR organizes training programs, professional development opportunities, and skill-building workshops. This investment in learning not only benefits employees but also strengthens the organization by fostering growth and development.
Performance Management
HR oversees employee evaluations, goal-setting, and feedback processes. This includes managing performance review cycles, providing coaching, and helping employees align their goals with organizational objectives.
Compliance and Legal
HR ensures the organization complies with labor laws, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. They also handle sensitive issues, such as handling employee data and conducting internal investigations when necessary.
Health, Safety, and Wellness
HR promotes a healthy work environment through safety protocols, wellness programs, and mental health resources. This role has become especially significant as organizations recognize the importance of supporting employee well-being.
Leave Management (FMLA, L&I, and Leave of Absence)
HR administers Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave for serious health conditions, childbirth, or to care for a family member. HR ensures that employees are informed of their rights and manages the documentation process to ensure compliance with FMLA regulations. L&I (Labor and Industries) leave covers workplace injuries or illnesses, entitling employees to benefits such as wage replacement and medical treatment. HR oversees the claims process and supports employees through their recovery period. HR also manages Leave of Absence (LOA) requests for employees who need extended time off for personal reasons that may not qualify under FMLA. This can include unpaid leave for educational pursuits, family obligations, or personal health, and HR ensures that each request aligns with organizational policies and employee rights.
